Each year, the Idaho Catholic Register invites Catholic, public and home-schooled students to tell about those things for which they are thankful. Children in kindergarten through 5th grade submit art entries. Those in 6th through 8th grade submit essays. We are thankful for all those who entered with the help of their teachers and parents.
Grand Prize -
I have many things to be grateful for, but recently I’ve been thankful for the privileges in my life, from my private education, my family’s financial stability, to my ability to have religious freedom and practice the Catholic faith.
We live in a world where every year it gets harder to put ourselves in others’ positions and understand the struggles of people different from us; to accept our neighbors’ journey through life. It’s easy to get distracted by the little things in life, and we often lose sight of Jesus’s main lesson, which is to love others. It is disheartening to me, as a young person, to see how divided we are as a community and as a nation, disagreeing on things as simple as human rights and justice for minorities.
Sometimes I wonder what kind of country I will have to grow up in and what kind of country the next generation will have to grow up in if the world continues on this way. And yet, even through the struggles and despair of the citizens of this country, there are always signs of human perseverance and the signs that people, though imperfect, are good, and will choose to do the right thing. So, this Thanksgiving I am thankful for all my privileges, but specifically for the people around me, who, though imperfect, I believe will always choose to do the right thing.
