Deacon Derrick O’Neill to become Judge O’Neill
Gov. Brad Little has appointed Deacon Derrick O’Neill as District Court Judge for the Fourth Judicial District. Deacon O’Neill serves at the Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist.
Deacon O’Neill is a partner in the farm of Jones Williams Fuhrman Gourley, P.A. According to a press release from the governor’s office, Deacon O’Neill has three decades of litigation experience and is considered a local expert in judicial foreclosures.
He is a graduate of the University of Utah’s S.J. Quinney College of Law and his received his bachelor’s degree from the University of Idaho.
Deacon O’Neill was ordained in 2017. He said the appointment should have no effect on his service as a deacon at St. John’s Cathedral.
Deacon Aaron to appear on ‘Journey Home’ program
Deacon Lou Aaron, parish administrator at Our Lady of the Rosary Parish in Boise, will appear as a guest on EWTN’s “Journey Home” program hosted by Marcus Grodi. The program airs on Mondays at 6 p.m. Mountain Time and re-airs on Saturday at 4 p.m.
Deacon Aaron flew out to Zanesville, Ohio, this week where the program will be taped. It is tentatively scheduled to air on Monday, Nov. 22.
The Boise deacon, who is a noted chef and owner of two Westside Drive-In restaurants in Boise, will be sharing the story of his return to the Catholic faith in late 1998 after struggling with alcoholism and a fire that destroyed his home. In 2016, he was ordained a deacon.
Earlier this year, Deacon Aaron was featured on Cardinal Timothy Dolan’s “Conversations with a Cardinal” pro-gram on the Catholic Channel and pro-filed in the National Catholic Register.
Deacon Bill Burns begins training to be canon lawyer
Deacon Bill Burns, who serves at the Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist, begins a four-year study to become a canon lawyer in September.
He will enroll at St. Paul University in Ottawa, Canada, to pursue a licentiate (license) in canon law. He will be able to take most of his course work at home through the university’s distance learning program, but will spend three weeks every spring on the Ottawa campus for more intensive study sessions.
Deacon Burns will continue his full-time job while taking canon law studies and will also still serve as deacon at the Cathedral, although in a diminished role, he said.
The Diocese has a need for more clergy to be trained in canon law to assist the diocese, primarily in marriage nullification cases, Deacon Burns said.
Deacon Burns has been ordained eight years.
Deacon Floyd Loomis will sign books in McCall
Deacon Floyd Loomis, who serves at St. Katharine’s Parish in Cascade, will sign and read from two new books of short stories he has written. The book signing is at the Barn Owl Bookstore in McCall on Thursday, Aug. 26 at 7 p.m.
The new books are, “A Run of Gar-nets and Other Idaho Tales,” and “The Rose and Other Urban Stories.”
Deacon Loomis is a winner of sever-al regional author awards in fiction and nonfiction. He has written for Idaho Magazine and the Idaho Catholic Reg-ister. His book, “As Long As Life, The Memoirs of a Pioneer Woman Doctor,” was a source book for the “Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman” TV series.
Deacon Loomis said all of his books include spiritual or Catholic themes. He was ordained a deacon in 2019.
