Be informed, pray, discern . . . and vote

Sisters and brothers in Christ, as we head into November, we are reminded of one of the greatest freedoms our country and state afford each of us: the freedom to vote. Throughout our beautiful state, numerous municipalities are conducting elections for mayor, city council, and other positions. There are also a number of measures on the ballot for consideration.

While these positions and measures are supposed to be nonpartisan by design,

they have become platforms to push other social and ideological narratives that have little to do with the health, safety and well-being of the communities they are supposed to serve. As a result, it is more important than ever to take the time to become informed about candidates, what their agendas are and what they stand for. We also need to inform ourselves of the precepts and foundations of our Church.

In keeping with the national landscape, we are now seeing candidates who are openly and even boastfully announcing support and endorsements from organizations that not only oppose our Church teachings, but are in direct opposition to our beliefs. Some will even claim to be members of our Church. This adds to the importance of doing one’s due diligence and, more importantly, casting one’s vote.

In closing, I ask all of us to take advantage of one of our fundamental freedoms — do our individual inquiries, apply prayerful discernment and vote for those candidates who best represent our core beliefs.

This is a critical time in many of our communities and it is crucial to vote to help chart the course for generations to come.
