"The Jubilee has always been an event of great spiritual, ecclesial, and social significance in the
life of the Church. Ever since 1300, when Boniface VIII instituted the first Holy Year – initially
celebrated every hundred years, then, following its biblical precedent, every fifty years, and finally
every twenty-five years – God’s holy and faithful people has experienced this celebration as a
special gift of grace, characterized by the forgiveness of sins and in particular by the indulgence,
which is a full expression of the mercy of God."

PILGRIMAGE
The pilgrimage to holy sites is the primary act of faith for this holy year. Bishop Peter is still in the process of designating holy sites for the Diocese of Boise. Meanwhile, the faithful can make a pilgrimage to the Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist, to St. Joseph’s Church in Pocatello, or to All Saints in Lewiston, all official sacred sites for Jubilee 2025.

Once at each site, the pilgrim can do several things:

CATHEDRAL OF ST. JOHN THE EVANGELIST

At the Cathedral: Visit and venerate the Jubilee Cross. This cross, which contains relics of the True Cross, can be found in the sanctuary of the cathedral. You are encouraged to spend moments of quiet prayer and veneration; touch or kiss the cross; and perform any of the acts required to obtain an indulgence (making a profession of faith, participating in the Eucharist and the Sacrament of Reconciliation, and praying for the intentions of Pope Francis).
ST. JOSEPH’S CHURCH

At St. Joseph’s in Pocatello, the parish provides materials for the pilgrim to learn about this important church in the state of Idaho. Quiet prayer or veneration in the church, in front of the cross, or at one of the Stations of the Cross or places of honor of the saints is appropriate. The Jubilee indulgence may be obtained at these sacred sites when, at that location, the pilgrim makes a profession of faith, participates in the Eucharist and the Sacrament of Reconciliation, and prays for the intentions of the pope.
ALL SAINTS CATHOLIC CHURCH

At All Saints in Lewiston, the parish provides materials for the pilgrim to learn about this important church in the state of Idaho. Quiet prayer or veneration in the church, in front of the cross, or at one of the Stations of the Cross or places of honor of the saints is appropriate. The Jubilee indulgence may be obtained at these sacred sites when, at that location, the pilgrim makes a profession of faith, participates in the Eucharist and the Sacrament of Reconciliation, and prays for the intentions of the pope.

INDULGENCES
In this Jubilee Year of Hope, Pope Francis has stated his wish for a Jubilee Indulgence to reach each of the faithful as a genuine experience of the hope we find in the promise of salvation. Therefore, the Year of Hope will entail the granting of indulgences in order for all to experience the closeness of God, who welcomes and saves.

WE’RE ALL IN NEED
These opportunities are open to all: children and the elderly, families, youth groups and small faith groups, individuals, and even those who are home-bound or incarcerated.

WHAT IS AN INDULGENCE?
An indulgence is “…the expression of the Church’s full confidence of being heard by the Father when…she asks him to mitigate or cancel the painful aspect of punishment by fostering its medicinal aspect through other channels of grace.”
​
BUT WHAT DOES THAT MEAN?
The church teaches that an indulgence is an act of mercy on the part of God. He grants from His abundant love the reparation for our acts of sinfulness that we, by ourselves, cannot provide, sparing us the punishment for some or all our sins. This reparation becomes available to us through “other channels of grace” when we perform certain acts with a penitent heart. A person who receives a plenary indulgence obtains full remission of punishment for sins committed. A person who receives a partial indulgence obtains partial remission.

WHAT ARE THE ACTS BY WHICH THE FAITHFUL OBTAIN THE INDULGENCE?

Pope Francis has specified the following:
1. The faithful may make a pilgrimage to specified holy sites, located in every cathedral or in the churches designated by the diocesan bishop, and in the four Papal Basilicas in Rome.

2. An Act of Mercy. Visiting the sick or a prisoner, feeding the hungry, clothing the naked or welcoming a migrant, “in a sense making a pilgrimage to Christ present in them,” can be another way to receive the indulgence. An indulgence could be obtained each day from such acts of mercy.
3. An Act of Penance. Abstain or fast from distractions of various kinds (social media, alcohol, etc.); donate to the poor.
4. To receive the indulgence, one must participate in the Sacraments of Reconciliation and Holy Eucharist. Then, a profession of faith and prayers for Pope Francis and his intentions, an Our Father, for example, must follow. (The Church allows that one can participate in the Sacrament of Reconciliation within several days of the other acts required to receive the indulgence.)

The Jubilee Indulgence can also be obtained for the deceased. Each of these acts may be offered on behalf of those in Purgatory.

¿QUÉ ES UNA INDULGENCIA?
Una indulgencia es “…la expresión de la plena confianza de la Iglesia de ser escuchada por el Padre cuando…ella le pide que mitigue o anule el aspecto doloroso del castigo fomentando su aspecto medicinal a través de otros canales de gracia.”

PERO, ¿QUÉ QUIERE DECIR ESO?
La iglesia enseña que una indulgencia es un acto de misericordia de parte de Dios, cuando Él concede de Su abundante amor la reparación por nuestros actos de maldad que nosotros, por nosotros mismos, no podemos ofrecer, librándonos del castigo por algunos todos nuestros pecados. Una persona que recibe una indulgencia plenaria obtiene la remisión completa del castigo por los pecados cometidos. Una persona que obtiene una indulgencia parcial obtiene una remisión parcial. En consecuencia, a través de “otros canales de gracia”—la oración y actos de misericordia realizados por la persona—el castigo por nuestros pecados es anulado (indulgencia plenaria) o reducido (indulgencia parcial.)

¿EN QUÉ FORMA LOS FIELES OBTIENEN LA INDULGENCIA?

El Papa Francisco ha especificado ciertos actos:

2. Un acto de misericordia. Visitar a un enfermo o a un preso, dar de comer al hambriento, vestir al desnudo o acoger a un migrante es un acto de peregrinación hacia Cristo presente en ellos, y puede ser otra forma de recibir la indulgencia. De estos actos de misericordia se puede obtener una indulgencia cada día.
3. Un acto de penitencia. Abstenerse o ayunar de distracciones de diversa índole (redes sociales, alcohol, etc.); hacer donativos a los pobres.
4. Para recibir la indulgencia, deben participar del Sacramento de la Reconciliación y la celebración de la Sagrada Eucaristía. A continuación, debe hacerse una profesión de fe y rezar por el Papa Francisco y sus intenciones (un Padrenuestro, por ejemplo). La Iglesia permite que se pueda participar en el Sacramento de la Reconciliación trans-curridos varios días de los otros actos requeridos para recibir la indulgencia).

Quienes no puedan participar en persona por motivos graves (ancianos, enfermos, presos) pueden obtener la indulgencia jubilar uniéndose en espíritu a los fieles, recitando el Padre Nuestro, el Credo y oraciones a María y a los santos.
También se puede obtener la indulgencia jubilar por los difuntos. Cada uno de estos actos puede ofrecerse en favor de los que están en el Purgatorio.
